First visit to NJIT as faculty

When you take a new job, there can be a million little administrative (and many times not-so-little!) tasks that need to be arranged. Today is my day to put the gears in motion - I'm riding up from Baltimore on the train to spend the day in Newark at NJIT. I hope to visit Human Resources / Benefits and the Sponsored Research Office, and perhaps the office for Study Abroad.

There are some exciting developments. NJIT has been making a push to hire many new faculty, which can create a space problem - where to put their offices and laboratories? This problem is at least in part a contributing factor that resulted in NJIT's Biological Sciences department being housed not at NJIT, but across the street at Rutgers.

The good news for faculty in Biological Sciences is that new laboratory space will be renovated at NJIT that will better serve our teaching and research missions. Today we will talk about how best to use this space. This is the sort of big administrative task that is the most exciting to tackle.
